Another week ends and readers with busy schedules would have missed some of our more interesting stories. Have you seen these news, analyses and comments? You won’t get them anywhere else:
Pick 1 — Remember the blue Mamee monster? We’ve all grown up with the sight of the blue monster chomping noodles on bright yellow packets with the label Mamee on them. Last week, KiniBiz’s Xavier Kong went down memory lane and visited the noodle factory in Malacca. In the resulting series of articles, we look back at Mamee’s history, take a tour of the factory and consider where the Mamee Monster is headed in the future.
Pick 2 — Could we have some more please? Proton has made a request for a RM1.7 billion grant from the Economic Council (EC), a unit under the Prime Minister’s Department chaired by the Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak. However, Just 47.3% of all vehicles sold in the first six months of the year were either Perodua or Proton, the first time in decades the market share of national cars was below the 50% mark.
Pick 3 — And the winner is … Indonesia’s General Elections Commission (KPU) on July 22 completed the recapitulation of votes for the 2014 presidential election, with presidential candidate Joko Widodo securing 70,997,833 votes, while his competitor Prabowo Subianto received 62,576,444 votes, Indonesia’s Antara news agency reported. Jokowi promised to make life simpler for investors by beefing up the country’s threadbare infrastructure, untangling near impenetrable regulations and sacking his ministers if they aren’t up to the job.
Pick 4 — Something is rotten in the state of Sabah … It seems unlikely that armed and hardened kidnappers would let their meal tickets just leave like that. Tiger might be underestimating the negotiating powers of the go-betweens, but really, it just doesn’t make good business sense to give up something for nothing. As crude as it may be, kidnapping is still just a business in the end, with the information of the whereabouts of the victims the item for trade.
Pick 5 — A nation mourns … Over the past few days, people from around the world have said they will continue to fly our national carrier. Let us, as Malaysians, also give the MAS crew and staff the support they have earned. We should also wholeheartedly reject any suggestions that the MH17 incident was some sort of divine wrath on MAS. It is bad enough that we speculate over God’s will on a regular day-to-day basis.
Pick 6 — The trade delusion … Though many experts fear that protectionism is undermining globalization, threatening to impede global economic growth, slower growth in global trade may be inevitable, and trade liberalization is decreasingly important.
