KiniBiz Issue 011 Uncertain state of the nation inside story image 01Our Cover story tries to make some sense and throw some light – if that is possible – on some recent and distressing developments, starting with some possible outcomes and deals for the top position of president of Umno which carries with it the prime minister’s position unless Umno loses at the next polls.

We also examine the current state of the economy and the possible outcomes. But what is very difficult to predict about economies is the all-important confidence factor. If enough people feel that things are bad and there is gloom and doom ahead, that becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

And then there is that huge elephant in the room – 1MDB of course. We go back to basics to explain why 1MDB is fundamentally flawed despite everything that is being said to assert otherwise. There are too many things wrong with this self-styled strategic investment company wholly owned by the Minister of Finance Inc.

But to make sense of the whole, one needs to have some historical perspective and we go into this too. The conclusion: to be truly independent we need to be free of money politics and all of its ramifications, including grand corruption.

Interview Ramon Thumbnail 010915 01Ramon Navaratnam weigh in as a voice for the nation at a time when people hunger for constructive views and a voice of reason, if not hope. Here is a man who is not afraid to say things as they are, no matter how painful they may be. A voice to remind the present and future generations about the pain of nation building.

In our Enterprise story, we look at the kampung boy who made good. Hailing from a small town in rural Johor, Puan Chan Cheong was told by his parents early on that a better life was within reach if he excelled in his studies and became his own boss. That was exactly what he set out to do, eventually establishing Green Packet Bhd and Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd.

As the ringgit continues to receive a beating we look at the local currency in relation to trade in our Economy section. As negative sentiment drags down the ringgit to lows not seen in nearly two decades, trade has benefitted with June figures surprising economists and beating expectations. Can the weakening currency turn around what is shaping up to be a rough year for trade?

Aside from these highlights there are articles discussing stocks and opinion pieces on everything from fixing the politics of money to a guide to spotting a Malaysian business journalist.
