KL shares rebound to end higher

The benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) ended the day 1.45 points better at 1,626.66, compared with last Friday’s 1,625.21 points.

The FBM KLCI moved between 1,618.26 and 1,627.44 throughout the day, after opening higher at 1,627.29.

On the broader market, losers outpaced gainers 719 to 214, with 271 counters unchanged, 557 counters untraded and 32 others suspended.

Total volume shrank to 1.56 billion shares worth RM1.71 billion from 1.93 billion shares worth RM1.8 billion billion last Friday.

The market was closed yesterday for the Thaipusam public holiday.

Bursa Malaysia remained in cautious trading as oversupply worries in global crude oil returned, said a dealer.

“Many investors remain on the sidelines given that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak will present the recalibrated Budget 2016 this Thursday due to further slide in crude oil prices.

“Investors are also closely watching the US Federal Reserve’s meeting this week since it will be its first (meeting) since raising interest rates in December,” said a dealer.

Among heavyweights, Maybank slipped 2 sen to RM8.29, while Public Bank, Petronas Chemicals and Axiata fell 6 sen each to RM18.14, RM6.84 and RM6.08 respectively.

Tenaga, however, bucked the trend, in lending support to the index with a 14 sen gain to RM12.94.

On the scoreboard, the FBM Emas Index eased 26.22 points to 11,305.3, the FBMT100 Index fell 16.56 points to 11,013.59, while the FBM Emas Syariah Index slid 30.17 points to 12,201.2.

The FBM 70 was 113.78 points easier at 12,573.33, while the FBM ACE declined 140.88 points to 5,827.16.

On a sectoral basis, the Finance Index trimmed 76.97 points to 13,552.54, the Plantation Index rose 11.49 points to 7,470.29 and the Industrial Index advanced 27.87 points to 3,174.29.

Among active stocks, APFT added 0. 5 sen to 22 sen, Tiger Synergy lost 0.5 sen to 8 sen, while AirAsia X and Compugates were flat at 21.5 sen and 4.5 sen respectively.

Main Market volume eased to 1.03 billion units worth RM1.6 billion from Friday’s 1.1 billion units worth RM1.64 billion.

Turnover on the ACE Market declined to 274.85 million shares valued at RM53.75 million from 408.83 million shares valued at RM75.4 million on Friday.

Warrants decreased to 250.28 million units worth RM52.99 million from Friday’s 421.57 million units worth RM80.89 million.

Consumer products accounted for 123.69 million shares traded on the Main Market, industrial products (196.22 million), construction (34.89 million), trade and services (407.59 million), technology (32.00 million), infrastructure (29.21 million), Spac (26.38 million), finance (37.44 million), hotels (696,000), properties (120.02 million), plantations (16.79 million), mining (0), Reits (10.26 million) and closed/fund (0).
