Bursa Malaysia extended its losses at mid-afternoon today on heavy selling in blue chips and selected heavyweights, battered by falling crude oil prices, dealer said.
At 3.02pm, the benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) declined by 9.36 points to 1,609.47 compared with Wednesday’s close of 1,618.83 points.
It opened lower at 1,616.12.
Market breadth was negative with losers outpacing gainers by 657 to 148, while 297 counters were unchanged, 649 untraded and 21 others suspended.
Turnover stood at 1.36 billion shares worth RM931.71 million.
The top gainers were Genting Plantations, which rose 22 sen to RM10.24, Concrete Engineering increased 19 sen to RM2.13, Carlsberg gained 12 sen to RM11.66 and BLD Plantation added 10 sen to RM9.10.
Among the top losers, British American Tobacco lost RM1.64 to RM54.32, UMS Holdings slipped 32 sen to RM2.68, Panasonic shed 24 sen to RM23.82 and MSM Malaysia gave up 24 sen to RM4.56.
Among heavyweights, Maybank and TNB fell 4 sen each to RM8.24 and RM12.84, Public Bank lost 16 sen to RM17.98 and Petronas Chemicals eased 3 sen to RM6.96.
On the scoreboard, the FBM Emas Index fell 74.60 points to 11,244.36, FBMT100 Index dropped 66.11 points to 10,942.87 and the FBM Emas Syariah Index was 85.84 points lower to 12,175.57.
The FBM ACE slipped 83.09 points to 5,911.97 and the FBM 70 contracted 85.47 points to 12,657.04.
Sector-wise, the Industrial Index was 25.81 points lower at 3,097.39, Plantation Index gained 0.74 point to 7,453.51 and the Finance Index lost 77.9 points to 13,492.26.
