KL shares lacklustre at mid-morning

Markets Mid-morning Bursa Malaysia inside story 01Bursa Malaysia was lacklustre at mid-morning today, battered by crude oil prices that fell below US$30 per barrel, a dealer said.

At 11.03am, the benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) was 5.26 points lower at 1,613.57, compared with Wednesday’s close of 1,618.33.

It had opened lower at 1,616.12.

Market breadth was negative with losers outpacing gainers 406 to 213, with 320 counters unchanged, 812 untraded and 21 others suspended.

Turnover stood at 736.57 million shares worth RM404.40 million.

In a note today, Hong Leong Investment Bank said in the short term, the local bourse is being held hostage to the fragile state of global markets and the accompanying bearish investor sentiment, with the primary focus on suppressed commodity prices and slower global economic growth due to China’s turmoil.

On the technical front, the local bourse is expected to retrace further this week towards the 1,600 level.

Among heavyweights, Maybank gained 1 sen RM8.29, but TNB fell 8 sen to RM12.80, Public Bank decreased 16 sen to RM17.98 and Petronas Chemicals eased 1 sen to RM6.98.

Among actives, Berjaya gained 3 sen to 37 sen, Guan Chong shed 3.5 sen to 15 sen, while Instacom recovered half-a-sen to 29 sen.

Of the top losers, British American Tobacco fell 46 sen to RM55.50, Nestle lost 42 sen to RM73, Dutch Lady contracted 28 sen to RM47 and Public Bank shed 16 sen to RM17.98.

Among the top gainers, Guinness Anchor accumulated 16 sen to RM13.62, Petron added 15 sen to RM6.50, Carlsberg recovered 14 sen to RM11.68 and Ta Ann increased 9 sen to RM5.39.

On the scoreboards, the FBM Emas Index decreased 42.34 points to 11,276.62, the FBMT100 dropped 38.17 points to 10,970.81 and the FBM Emas Shariah Index fell 57.79 points to 12,204.62.

The FBM 70 lost 52.93 points to 12,689.57, and the FBM Ace reduced 4.98 points to 5,990.08.

Sector-wise, the Industrial Index slid 15.68 points to 3,107.52, but the Plantation Index increased 0.21 point to 7,452.98 and the Finance Index weakened 31.54 points to 13,538.62.
