MAHB lays blame on AirAsia at PAC hearing

By Malaysiakini

MAHB & AirAsiaMalaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has laid most of the blame for the massive cost overrun for the klia2 on AirAsia’s doorstep, the Public Accounts Committee says.

“MAHB said AirAsia was the main reason in terms of the upscaling, so now we want to ask AirAsia why (it) asked for a bigger airport, runway, etc.

“MAHB said it could have built it for RM2 billion but it would not be as big as it is now,” PAC chairperson Nur Jazlan Mohamed told reporters today.

He said that AirAsia would testify before the PAC on April 28, so that the committee could present a balanced report on the ongoing Kklia2 debacle.

Nur Jazlan said that as far as MAHB was concerned, AirAsia would have to move to klia2 on May 9, when the LCCT would be closed.

“MAHB says it has received the certificate of compliance… We were also told by MAHB that the cracks (on the runway) can be rectified,” he said.

Delays not subject to probe

Nur Jazlan said that MAHB also blamed the contractor and initial consultant for the project.

He said that the PAC may call these parties as well to clarify matter, but there are no plans as yet.

He also stressed that the probe into klia2 does not involve a tight deadline despite the fact that the airport will be opened soon.

He said the objective of the probe is to learn lessons to ensure such mistakes made in the construction of klia2 will not recur.

klia2 cost doubled from RM2 billion to RM4 billion while the opening was delayed from the initial Jan 28, 2013.

However, Nur Jazlan said the PAC will not probe the delay as it is a “commercial decision’.
