telekom malaysiaTelekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) and its unit Packet One Networks Malaysia (P1) today signed collaboration agreements with Celcom Axiata Bhd to leverage on their existing network infrastructure to extend services to their customers.

TM group chief executive officer (CEO) and P1 chairman Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa said the agreements on the extension of the Next-Gen Backhaul (NGBH) services, extension of High-Speed Broadband (HSBB) access by Celcom as well as that of domestic roaming service from Celcom to P1.

He said TM and Celcom had established the partnership since 2011 and the following phase in 2015 to accelerate the fiberisation rollout of Celcom’s 4G network through TM’s NGBH, being part of Celcom’s ongoing effort to expand its LTE site deployment.

“Celcom, on the converse, will be extending its mobile domestic roaming services to P1 and this would enable TM to be champion of convergent,” he told reporters at the signing ceremony today.

He said P1, which is currently being developed as the mobile arm and mobility centre of excellence within TM group, was expected to launch its first mobile product this year to complement the fixed broadband that they have.

Celcom’s CEO Shazally Ramly said the extension of the HSBB access agreement would allow the company to offer fixed broadband services both for business to customers and business-to-business segments.

“The negotiation took us two-and-a-half years. It took quite a bit of time for us as we were drawing back on our LTE strategy and the backhaul requirement in order to make us the strongest 4G network.

“As a result of this agreement by the end of March we would be nearing more than 4,200 LTE sites which would put us at the forefront of LTE network,” he said.

He said Celcom was aware of the challenge facing service providers as more competitors emerged in the market and in order to sustain and continuously become the provider of choice, the company needs to have a robust backhaul and resilient network.

Celcom is strong in specifically government sector segment and areas outside the Klang Valley.

In order to sustain clients, the company needs to provide comprehensive offers which include fixed broadband services on top of its mobile, expected to be launched by second half this year, he said.

Shazally said the collaboration with TM would facilitate both to optimise cost and efficiently utilise its infrastructure for faster service deployment plus avoiding unnecessary duplication of network infrastructure.
