The recent announcement by Netflix that its Internet TV service is now available globally is great news from an industry perspective, said iflix Malaysia chief executive officer Azran Osman-Rani.
“It reaffirms that the shift in entertainment consumption to on demand is a global phenomenon. For consumers, it is great that at least a subset of the Netflix branded content is now legally available without a VPN (virtual private network),” he told KINIBIZ via email.
To a question on how iflix is going to compete with Netflix now that it is available in this region, he replied: “From an iflix perspective, we are obsessively focused on the unique challenges of emerging markets whether it be pricing, payments, infrastructure challenges, cultural preferences, or local programming and language. We will continue to provide the broadest, most relevant selection of content for the local consumers at a price that everyone can afford.”
When asked how sustainable it would be for iflix to continue charging low monthly subscription fees now that Netflix has come into the picture, he replied: “Completely sustainable. No change.”
iflix, which launched in Malaysia last May, announced in mid-December that it had crossed the one million member mark, just six months after its launch. The service is currently available in Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines.
