Aeon’s RM100,000 wedding financing draws flak online

Aeon Credit Services (M) Bhd has come under fire from netizens after a full-page advertisement offering up to RM100,000 in personal financing for “dream weddings” was published in The Malay Mail last Friday.

In an advertisement entitled ‘Plan Your Dream Wedding’, Aeon is offering up to RM100,000 loans with its Aeon i-Cash Personal Financing programme.

Conditions include, but are not limited to, having a minimum income of RM800 per month. To further entice potential customers, a RM50 Aeon Big gift voucher is offered, along with up to seven years of repayment period and no guarantor is needed.

The original Facebook post with a photo of the full-page advertisement by Alwi Adam EzazWealth has garnered over 1,000 likes and around 720 people shared, as well as plenty of comments. The majority of those who commented seemed to disapprove the move by Aeon Credit and the idea of spending lavishly for a wedding.

Facebook user Aini Hayati Abdul Rahim questioned the need for a RM100,000 wedding by saying: “(RM)100,000 just for a wedding?”

Others wondered how long would it take for a person earning RM800 a month to fully repay the loan. User Zack Jersey responded by answering: “Maybe when (the borrower turns) 80 years old.”

User Achiik Jerr appeared to be more enterprising. He said he would take the RM100,000 loan, use RM5,000 for the wedding and the remaining as capital for business.

The promotion period runs from Oct 9 till Nov 30, 2015.
