The Selangor government has demanded an apology from TV3, the New Straits Times (NST) and Utusan Melayu for what it alleges are defamatory allegations, according to a statement today.
The letter of demand was filed on Sept 25 by state investment arms Menteri Besar Selangor Inc (MBI) and Darul Ehsan Investment Group Bhd (DEIG) claiming there were various defamatory allegations against MBI and DEIG with “the intention to degrade MBI and DEIG in the eyes of the public”.
The letter referred to the published articles titled “Why No State Officials in DEIG?” on Aug 21, 2015 by NST, “Aset RM30B Boleh Lebur Bila-bila Masa” on Aug 22, 2015 by Utusan and during TV3 live talk show ‘Soal Jawab: Skandal RM30 Billion DEIG’ aired on Sept 2, 2015.
“These publications have tarnished the reputation of and further caused considerable distress and embarrassment to DEIG and ultimately MBI resulting in hatred, contempt or ridicule, suspicion and resentment towards MBI and DEIG respectively.
“The allegations made in the publications are entirely inaccurate, baseless, malicious and false and made without care, diligence and devoid of ‘fair journalism’ practice,” said MBI in the statement.
MBI is demanding a full and unequivocal public retraction of the damaging allegations and a proper public apology, to be published in terms to be approved by MBI within seven days from the date of the letters of demand issued failing which, MBI will commence legal proceedings without any notice.
