The Energy Commission (EC) is still in discussions with the parties involved for power plant project Track4A and hence, a resolution to the matter is still not in sight.
“EC is not at liberty to answer your query as the matter is still being discussed and looked into by the parties involved (TNB, SIPP). EC is keeping a close watch on all projects including the Track 4A project, safekeeping both the industry and consumers’ interests,” EC replied via email to KINIBIZ when asked about the status of Track4A.
“No project is being considered in isolation and it will be thoroughly assessed and our decision will always be based on what it takes to keep the lights on at the most reasonable tariff,” EC added.
The digitaledge Weekly recently reported that SIPP (SIPP Energy Sdn Bhd) had lost Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) as its partner in Track4A and that the former had until Sept 28 to complete the submission for the 1,100 megawatt (MW) to 1,400 MW combined cycle gas turbine power plant in Johor.
The paper was also told by Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water Maximus Ongkili that SIPP had found a new partner for the project, but that he could not reveal who it was.
When contacted, TNB advised KINIBIZ to refer to the Energy Commission on the matter.
Track4A was awarded directly to SIPP in March last year without a tender and in June the same year, TNB announced that it would go ahead with SIPP for Track4A, despite opposition from TNB unions on the matter.
YTL Power Bhd had initially been a member of the consortium for Track4A, but withdrew from the project in June last year because of some “misconceptions” on the way the contract was awarded.
