Thousands of South Koreans marched Saturday in a rally against the government’s labour policies and demanded the resignation of conservative President Park Geun Hye.

Organizers said about 50,000 people, many of them wearing masks, participated in the protests in central Seoul. Police put the number of protesters at 14,000.

The event was largely peaceful, according to TV reports. A similar rally in November turned violent, and dozens were injured in clashes between the protesters and police.

At Saturday’s event, called by more than 50 trade unions and other groups, participants also criticized the police action in November when water cannon were used against the demonstrators.

About 500 representatives of religious groups and the opposition called for calm during the march.

Police had earlier banned the rally near the town square, but the ban was thrown out by the administrative court in Seoul.

The protesters want to block labour reforms sought by the government. They said the changes will make it easier for companies to sack employees.
