InvestSmart Fest 2014 organised by the Securities Commission (SC) aims to educate the public to invest wisely. The six-days event (Sept 9 to 14) held in One Utama Shopping Center is the first retail investor event of its kind and brought together 37 key market players.
Speaking to Kinibiz at the event, Khairul Ridzwan Abdul Kuddus, the deputy general manager and head of the SC’s Investor Affairs and Complaints said that the event aims to promote smart investing among the public.
“There are two things to smart investing, we want people to know about the products offered on the capital market, and we want to bring the message that when you invest, invest wisely, that means doing some prior research instead of simply taking tips offered verbally by friends and family,” said Khairul.
He added that InvestSmart Fest 2014 also seeks to educate aspired investors by giving out an ‘InvestSmart Starter Kit’ which contains basic information on investing in the capital market.
In addition, social media plays an important role in InvestSmart’s initiative to empower the public as well. Its Facebook page, InvestSmart SC offers various financial planning tips and guidances.
“We want to reach out to all levels of society, we want to communicate in a simple manner not just on the ground but on websites and social medias. Facebook is an interactive platform and we can communicate with investors conveniently through sharing and postings of information in bite size chunk,” he added.
Asked about the response of the public towards the event, Khairul said that it has been good so far as the venue is strategic and is capable of attracting a wide variety of people with varying levels of income.
“We hope for it to be an annual event depending on how successful it is since this is the first time we are doing it on this scale,” he said.
