Of the 150,000 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that have received eVouchers for the purchase of the goods and services tax (GST) accounting software, only 17,000 have redeemed them.

Deputy Finance Minister Ahmad Maslan said the vouchers, worth RM1,000, are given to the SMEs to buy the software compatible with the GST’s accounting system from the 77 appointed vendors.

“The eVouchers, managed by SME Corp, were introduced as a fast, immediate, and efficient method to distribute grants to SMEs to buy or upgrade the software in compliance with the GST which will be implemented on April 1.

“The eVouchers were sent by email to the qualified SMEs and we hope they use them,” he told reporters after presenting certificates to the vendors of the GST accounting system here today.

Meanwhile, Ahmad said as of yesterday, 311,658 companies had registered with the Royal Malaysian Customs Department for the GST.

“However, about 50,000 companies have yet to register and after Feb 28 if they fail to do so, they will face a compound of up to RM15,000 and would be forced to register,” he said.

Ahmad said these companies are supposed to register for the GST and cannot avoid it as the government has data and information on them from the Inland Revenue Board.
