Inside story image KL-city 160115 01The leading index (LI), which monitors the economic performance in advance, increased slightly to 118.5 points in November 2015, from 118.4 points in the previous month, said the Statistics Department.

The increase was propelled by the number of housing units approved (0.6%) and the Bursa Malaysia Industrial Index (0.1%), it said.

The annual change of LI decelerated to negative 0.7% in the reference month as against 0.3% in October 2015, said the department in ‘Malaysian Economic Indicators: Leading, Coincident & Lagging Indices November 2015’ today.

The coincident index (CI), which measures current economic activity, rose 0.2% in November 2015 with the main contributor to the increase being the real contribution to the Employees Provident Fund (0.2%).

However, the annual change of CI remained at 1.6% in the reference month.

The LI recorded a lower annual change as compared to the previous month, while annual growth was unchanged.

Both the diffusion indices reached above 50% for the first time since May 2015.

This scenario indicates that economic growth will remain positive, albeit at a slower pace in the months ahead.
