MACC generic in-storyThe Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will raise attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali’s decision to not pursue the cases involving Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to the MACC Operations Review Panel (PPO).

The PPO is an independent panel which reviews cases by the MACC which are not pursued by the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

The MACC top management made this decision in a meeting on the matter today, the anti-graft body said in a statement today.

Panel members are Hamid Bugo, Jawhar Hassan, Zamani Abdul Ghani, Azizah Arshad, Wan Abdul Wahab Abdullah, Normah Omar, Sundarmoorthy M Pathmanathan and Lim Chee Wee.

Apandi yesterday cleared Najib of wrongdoing over the discovery of RM2.6 billion in his bank accounts.

Najib was also cleared over the RM42 million from state-owned firm SRC International Sdn Bhd which allegedly went into his accounts.

MACC special operations director Bahri Mohd Zain earlier said the anti-graft body will appeal to the Attorney-General’s Chambers to reconsider its decision as the case is “straightforward”.

Apandi yesterday explained that the RM2.6 billion came from the Saudi royal family.

The sum, originally cited in the US dollar amounted to US$681 million. Of this, Apandi said, US$620 was returned to the Saudi family.

He said the MACC also could not prove there was an element of corruption in the SRC International matter.
