The Home Ministry has suspended the publishing permit for two newspapers owned by The Edge Media Group over its reportage on controversial 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
In a statement this afternoon, The Edge stated that the three-month suspension of its weekly publication The Edge Malaysia and its daily newspaper The Edge Financial Daily will commence from July 27, 2015.
According to The Edge Media Group, a letter from the ministry claimed the two publications’ reporting on 1MDB were”prejudicial or likely to be prejudicial to public order, security or likely to alarm public opinion or is likely to be prejudicial to public and national interest” and warned that if the publications continue to publish during the three-month period, the permits would be revoked.
“We don’t see how exposing the scam to cheat the people of Malaysia of billions of Ringgit can be construed as being detrimental to public and national interest,” said The Edge Media Group publisher Ho Kay Tat. “This is nothing more than a move to shut us down in order to shut us up.”
Ho added the group will go to court to contest the suspension.
