The adoption of information and communication technology (ICT) as an integral part of doing business among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) is still lagging behind, Prime Minister’s Department Minister Wee Ka Siong said.
He said three-quarters of 665,000 SMEs in the country are not equipped with ICT frameworks as a key part of their business.
As knowledge in ICT is a pre-condition to a successful business, he said SMEs should be more ICT savvy in taking up new applications and software to enhance their productivity.
“With increasing number of business transactions are now done online, SMEs that failed to embrace technologies will miss a lot of opportunities,” he told reporters after the opening of the first Tech-Talk 2015 programme here today.
The event was jointly organised by the MCA’s Young Professional Bureau, the secretariat for Empowerment of Indian Entrepreneurs and Akademi Belia.
Today’s series was divided into two session –- a live tweet session #AskSME in the morning where 35 questions were answered on the spot by Wee followed by talks from successful young entrepreneurs in IT and technology in the afternoon.
On the live tweet session, Wee said most of the questions posted were common and had already been answered by him.
As information explosion might have led to confusion among youths, he said they should seek clarification by getting the correct information from the right sources.
